Description of the Music Department

Glendale College's music department, located on the second floor of the auditorium building, offers a full range of courses in fundamentals, musicianship, harmony, appreciation, history, technology, and recording as well as classes in piano, voice and guitar. Private lessons are available on most instruments, including voice, through the Applied Music Program.

The Department also offers a wide range of performing ensembles which are both an integral part of every musician's education and an opportunity for adults from the community to participate in the performance of great masterworks. Instrumental performing ensembles at Glendale College include the Community Orchestra, various chamber groups, and Jazz Band. Vocal performing ensembles include the College Choir (non-auditioned mixed voices), Concert Singers (auditioned mixed voices), Vocal Ensemble (auditioned vocal jazz), and Music Theatre (auditioned and choreographed mixed voices).

The department's facilities include:

A music lab, which is open approximately fifty hours each week. The lab features sound-isolated practice rooms (each with a piano), an extensive library of CDs, DVDs, and video cassettes (along with listening / viewing facilities), and music reference books. There are 22 Apple computer workstations with MIDI controller keyboards and Digidesign audio interfaces. Current software is available on all stations and includes: Sibelius 5, LogicPro Studio, ProTools, Reason, Digital Performer, and many others. The lab is also equipped with recording and sequencing hardware including: Yamaha and Mackie monitors, Euphonix MC mix, numerous MIDI controllers (M-Audio, Frontier, Alesis), a collection of microphones (Rode, Shure, Oktava), and other miscellaneous recording hardware.

Yamaha grand pianos in each classroom.

A four-hundred seat auditorium with fully-equipped stage, featuring a nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano.
