WebCT Writing Jam

 

Login Procedures:

  1. See one of the Learning Center staff members, so they can assign you a user name and password.
  1. Click onto the internet.
  1. Type this into this the address box:  www.glendale.edu.
  1. Click the box on the left (for California).
  1. Click on “Online Classes” (on the blue bar in the middle).
  1. Click “Log in.”

  1. Click “Log in” AGAIN ~ the one on the right side: blue on yellow.

  1. Your WebCT ID is “Account Assigned” on your sheet (e.g. gc_101).  Your initial password is given to you on the sheet, but you can change that once you’re in the system.
  1. Open “Writing Jam” by clicking on it (it’s in blue).

To Open Quizzes:

  1. Go to “Quizzes.”

  1. Click on the quiz you’d like to work on.  The quizzes progress from simple to easy to challenging to difficult.  Start with an easy one—if it’s much too easy, move on to the next level.
  1. Click on the name of the quiz (in black)—e.g. “Helping Verbs (Challenging).” 
  1. Click on “Begin Quiz” in the grey box.
  1. The directions for each quiz are at the top—read them CAREFULLY!  Sometimes you are asked to pick ONE item, sometimes two or more.  Sometimes it asks for the fragment, sometimes for the one that ISN’T a fragment.  So be SURE to read the directions.
  1. After you click on your choice of answer, click on “Save Answer.”  Do this for EVERY individual answer. 
  1. Once you’re done with the quiz, click on “Finish.”  Twice it will ask you to confirm—hit OK if you’re sure you’ve saved every answer and are ready to go on (at the top right of the quiz page, you should see checks by every number—if there’s an exclamation point, it means you forgot to hit “Save Answer.”
  1. Click on “View Results.”  It will show you each question.  Some quizzes show you the right and wrong answers, some only show you if you’re wrong, some give you feedback, some don’t—they’re all different.  Be sure to study the ones you’ve gotten wrong.  That’s how you learn! 
  1. Once you’ve looked over your answers, you can go onto the next quiz by clicking on “Quizzes” in the bar at the top of the page—it looks like this:

To Open Lecture Slides:

  1. Go to “Homepage” in the bar at the top of the screen.

  1. Click on the slide for the PowerPoint slideshow you want to watch.  It will give these directions: “If you are working on a GCC campus computer, click Go to Slideshow.  If you are working on your home computer, you may need to download the FREE Microsoft Viewer before you watch the slideshow. Click Free Viewer Download.
  1. Once into the slideshow, every time you click your mouse, it will move on to the next line of the frame or the next frame.  If you have a roller on your mouse, rolling up will allow you to go backwards and see a previous line or slide.  A few of the slideshows (but not many) have an arrow at the top that you will use to go forward and backward.

 

To Use WordBank:

  1. Click on “Wordbank” and click on a week to see the list of vocabulary words.

  1. Choose a word you’d like to learn and click on it. 
  1. You will see a sentence in which the word is used and then a list of choices for the definition.  Try to figure out the definition from reading the sentence.  When you think you know, click “Next.”
  1. You will see the correct definition for the word and then another sentence containing the word.  Read that new sentence to reinforce the meaning.
  1. You can then click “Next” to see the following definition, or return to the numbers at the top and look around for different words.  There are quizzes corresponding to each week’s vocabulary words in the “Quizzes” section.

 

To Use “Grammar”

  1. Click on “Grammar” on the homepage.
  1. Click on “Grammar Websites” or “More Grammar Websites” for a list of links to various online grammar exercises.

 

To Use “My Progress”

  1. Click on “My Progress” on the homepage.
  1. You will see a list of your scores for the quizzes you’ve done.

General Hint: DON’T USE THE BACK BUTTON to return to a previous site or the homepage.  Go to the bar at the top of the page (like below) and click on where you want to go or click on “Homepage.”  If you have too many tabs open, it can get confusing.
